One Fine, Fiery Day

Two years worth of bloody effort.

It finally paid off.

The gasifier I was working with is now producing constant rate of combustible gases that can be utilized as fuel for internal combustion engine. A new era of alternative and renewable source of non-petroleum based hydrocarbon fuel has began here in the own soil of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS.

Gasification: How It Works

When any carbonaceous (carbon-containing) organic matter is burned in excess of oxygen (complete combustion), it will theoretically produce carbon dioxide and water:

Fuel + Oxygen + Heat -----> Carbon Dioxide + Water

But when an organic matter is burned with controlled amount of oxygen below stoichiometric, an incomplete combustion will occur. This will theoretically produce carbon monoxide, hydrogen and perhaps some trace of methane:

Fuel + Oxygen + Heat -----> Carbon Monoxide + Hydrogen + Methane

Now methane and hydrogen here are highly combustible, but methane usually exists as 2 percent or less in the whole composition. Hydrogen and carbon monoxide however are very significant in amount. This mix is what we call Producer Gas.

Producer Gas, also known as Synthesis Gas/Syngas, is flammable and can be utilized as fuel for internal combustion engine, both spark-ignition and compression-ignition.

One day, my dreams will come true. Just a little bit more to push now, until one day it finally materializes.
